In the early years of the Guildhouse, the annual membership fee was set at 6 shillings (30p), which would be equivalent to around £15 in today's money. The fee entitled the member to come into the building as a club-house, with admission to most classes without further charge.
Initial membership in 1925 is recorded as 347, rising to 430 six years later. In 1946, at the end of WWII, it stood at just over 500. The 1977/78 academic year enrolments are noted as an an all-time high of 1000 - whether this figure is equivalent to a membership of 1000 is not clear..
As external financial support was reduced over the years, first the common room and, later, the warden's lodging were turned into classrooms in order to boost the number of students who could be catered for. The concept of membership was dropped in favour of an 'enrolment' fee for each course attended.
The chart below shows the number of enrolments during the last 20 years. Given that each student is required to re-enrol each term (Spring, Summer & Autumn) in order to continue his/her studies then 3000 enrolments is roughly equivalent to 1000 students attending throughout the year. With some students enrolling on multiple courses, the actual number of regular users would probably be slightly lower.
